Sophie Braslau was born in New York City on August 16, 1892 ¹ . Her parents, Dr. Abel Braslau and Alexandra Goodelman, both from Russia, had early recognize on the musical talent of their only child. After first studying piano, she studied singing with a number of teachers, including 3 years studing with Arturo Buzzi-Peccia, and finally with Marcella Sembrich. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1914, never having sung on the stage before, and remained there for seven seasons, singing 242 performances of 25 roles. However, these roles were mainly of a minor nature, and it wasn't until she left the Met and launched herself on a concert career that she enjoyed great success. She became one of the most popular singers of her time, and although she did appear in opera again as Carmen and Marina ("Boris Godunov") with the Philadelphia Opera (1930-1931), she remained almost exclusively a recitalist. She toured Canada and the principal cities of Europe. Her last appearances were with the Philharmonic Society of New York in 1934. Sophie Braslau died on December 22, 1935. She had been ill for almost two years and bedridden for six months. -------------------------------------------------------------- ¹ - some sources points to 1902 as her year of birth
