Pepi Littmann

Pepi Littmann [Peshe Kahane] (1874-1930)

Pepi Littmann (Peshe Kahane, ca. 1874 – 1930) was born in Tarnopol, Eastern Galicia. 

Littmann was one of the broder-zinger, and her domain was the inn, the wine garden and the small hall, as opposed to the stage. She led the most popular of the traveling Yiddish vaudeville troupes and was known especially for her couplets, which were sung by Jews and non-Jews alike. 

Littmann, who recorded in Lemberg, Budapest and New York, often performed in a comic cross-dressing role as a khosid, a hasidic male with a kapeliush (silk head covering), peyes (earlocks), a kapote (long black coat), short pants, white socks and slippers. 

During World War I Littmann was based in Odessa, where she was adopted by literary circles around S. Y. Abramovitsh (Mendele Moykher Sforim). 

She died in Vienna.
