Cantor Sidney Shicoff, father of Neil Shicoff, was born in 1920 in New York City. His father, a baker from the Kiev region, became a self taught cantor and father and son sang at weddings and in synagogues in the NY area. Sidney's first major engagement was for High Holiday services at the Stone Avenue Synagogue in Brooklyn. He concertized and officiated at Catskill hotels such as Grossinger's, The Concord, Pines and Shenk's; he also sang at Carnegie Hall, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Severance Hall, and Madison Square Garden. Cantor Shicoff was also the host of a Jewish program on Radio Station WEVD in New York in the '50s and participated in the film "Kol Nidre". He died of a heart attack in 1965, at age 45.
